Last date for Aadhaar—PAN linking is in August!
The last date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) and linking Aadhaar with PAN of taxpayers is extended till last August. The official twitter handle of the IT department said the move to enhance the time limit for filing ITRs beyond was made “in view of difficulties faced by taxpayers.”
While ITRs could be filed by August 5 only, the Aadhaar-PAN linking can be done till August 31.
The government had made obligatory to link these two databases for filing ITRs from 1st of July 2017. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) gave a statement giving the dates have been extended on receiving complaints from taxpayers that they were unable to log on to the e-filing website of the Income Tax department, which is the possible reason of delay in filing ITRs at their end. Getting these complaints the government has henceforth extended the date of linking Aadhaar number to the PAN number.
There were also some complaints that taxpayers were unable to link Aadhaar with PAN as their names were stated differently in the database relating to the two documents. This decision of the government was taken by the officials of the tax department for a single reason, as mentioned by some senior officials, that is to ease out the panic situation among the taxpayers.
“For the purpose of e—filing return, it would be sufficient as of now to quote Aadhaar or acknowledgment number for having applied for Aadhaar on the e-filing website. “The actual linking of PAN with Aadhaar can be done subsequently, but any time before August 31, 2017,” the CBDT said.
However, it warned that the income tax returns will not be processed until the linkage of Aadhaar with PAN is completed successfully. The senior officials also declared that in order to facilitate the e-filing of the income tax returns, the government has also decided to give an extension of five days for the same. The return could be filed up to August 5.
The department also declared that the further extension would be given as already over 2 crore income tax returns have been received and no major fault on the e-filing portal had been spotted.

The department has also requested taxpayers to state cash deposits made in bank accounts summing up to Rs 2 lac or more, post demonetization between November 9th & December 30th last year, in the ITRs. The ITRs to be filed by July 31 effect to the 2016-17 financial year 2017-18.
