What is voter ID card?

Issued by the election commission of India, the Indian Voter ID Card serves as an identity proof while casting votes in the electronic voting machine in Assembly, Lok Sabha and Municipal elections in India. It can be issued to all the citizens of the country who are above the age of 18 years. The voter ID card carries the personal details of the person whereas a unique identification number. Till now more than 450 million voter ID cards have been distributed all across the country.

How to apply online?

Now a day’s one can apply online to get a voter ID card. Follow the step by step instructions given below to get a voter ID card.

  1. One can apply on the official website of Election commission of India called the National Voters Service Portal.
  2. Visit the National Voters Service Portal through the link given http://www.nvsp.in/
  3. After opening the online portal, click on the tab saying “Apply Online for Registration of New Voter”.
  4. After clicking on this a page will be displayed with “Form 6”.
  5. This is the online application form.
  6. Fill up the application form carefully.
  7. You will see three options in the end after filling the form. Click on “reset” if you did some mistakes while filling the form. Click on “save” if you wish to save the details but not submit the application form. And click on “submit” if you are done filling the form and wish to submit it further.
  8. This way the online application form will be submitted. After some time Block Level Officer (BLO) will come down to your place to verify the details.
  9. You will receive an application ID number. You can use this number to track the status of your voter ID card.
  10. After the verification process, the voter ID card will be dispatched to your home in less than a week.

How to apply offline?

If one does not wish to apply online nor do not have proper access to internet or computer, the offline application can also be sent. Follow the step by step instructions given below to apply offline.

  1. Download the application form from the online portal of Election Commission of India called the National Voters Service Portal.
  2. Visit the National Voters Service Portal through the link given http://www.nvsp.in/
  3. Take the print out of the application form.
  4. Fill in all the details of the application form.
  5. Submit the form to the nearby election commission office along with 2-3 passport size photographs and all the required documents.
  6. This way your application form will be submitted and after some time Block Level Officer (BLO) will come down to your place to verify the details.
  7. You will receive an application ID number. You can use this number to track the status of your voter ID card.
  8. After the verification process, the voter ID card will be dispatched to your home in less than a week.

Proof of Identity Documents

  1. 10th Standard passing certificate
  2. Birth certificate issued by the civic agency of your state or any other appropriate document signifying the voter’s age.
  3. School Leaving Certificate Specifying Age
