The Tamil Nadu Government is putting continuous efforts in making the lives of its people harmonious and comfortable. Following this objective, the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa launched the Free Bus Pass Scheme to benefit the students. This step has been taken to make the process of education a lot cheaper by cutting down transportation costs. The scheme is launch by the joint efforts of the State Education Department.

The free bus passes are made available for all students that fall in the age-group of 6-14 years. Using a bus pass will let a school student travel easily to school without paying money on bus fares. This smart card issued will be applicable for all government transport buses that are functional in the state and all the districts of the state.

The Tamil Nadu Free students’ bus passes will be available for all school students studying in Classes 1 through 8th. The journey will be facilitated from home to school and back for all the card holders. The smart card is valid until 31st December 2020.

Previously, the service was spread and prepared as per estimated 28.05 Lakh students of the state. It was the statistic for the academic year 2015-16. This year when CM Jayalalithaa re-launched the scheme for 2016-17 school years, she handed over five smart cards to recipients. On the event, the former CM also presented the statistics for this year.

This year the government and state education department will join hands to provide benefit to 31.11 Lakh students. For the same purpose, the government has passed a Rs. 504.31 Crore budget. The budget for last academic year was Rs. 480 Crore.

The Tamil Nadu State Government, headed under CM Jayalalithaa is making reforms at a spectacular pace. For making education prices bearable for all students; the government released a new scheme. Under this project, the government will issue smart cards for all private as well as public schools in the state. These cards will allow the students to travel for free in the state corporation buses from and to the schools. Concerned to necessity many schools are placed closer to towns and students from distant villages had to travel way longer to reach schools.

With this scheme in action, the transportation fee will be relieved that parents used to bear earlier. It will allow more children to reach their schools safely and timely, so it won’t let their education suffer.

  • Children can sign up for free bus passes by applying to their school principals.
  • Parents have to submit a written application along with the address proof and a passport size photograph of their child.
